Dr. Edward J. Grandt

Age 89 of Elmira, New York, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 13, 2017 at his home at Woodbrook. Dr. Grandt was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Stein Grandt, of Elmira. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Katya Grandt of Cortez, Colorado; his daughter, Katherine Grandt of Geneva, New York; his granddaughter, Annaluna Grandt of Cortez, Colorado; and his sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Richard Martin of Sarasota, Florida. Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, Dr. Grandt studied medicine in Switzerland and New York City before moving to Elmira following his marriage to Irene. In Elmira, Dr. Grandt practiced medicine at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital. He founded Ivy Medical Arts, a premier provider of obstetric and gynecological health care; and he founded Planned Parenthood in Elmira. After retirement from his clinical practice, Dr. Grandt served with the Indian Health Service on the Navajo reservation near Shiprock, New Mexico. A past president of both Temple B’nai Israel and the Arnot Ogden Medical Staff, Dr. Grandt served as director on many Elmira and regional boards including the Chemung Valley Savings and Loan Association, Elmira College, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Planned Parenthood, and the John W. Jones Museum. He donated land near Big Flats that created Plymouth Woods, now a part of the Finger Lakes Land Trust.  Dr. Grandt’s intellect and stamina were outshone only by his generosity and his penchant for helping others. He will be remembered as a professional caregiver and as a pioneer of women’s health services throughout the Southern Tier. Dr. Grandt will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the Elmira community. MEMBERS OF THE GRANDT FAMILY WISH TO GREET ALL WHO KNEW DR.
