Marsden, Malcolm M. Ph.D
Age 95 of Elmira, NY died on November 30, 2017. He was born on November 6, 1922 in Plymouth, MA, the son of George C. and Anna Marsden. He grew up in Milton, MA. He received his B.A. from Yale, his M.A. from Harvard and a Ph.D from Syracuse University. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was a professor of English Literature at Elmira College from 1955 until he retired in 1993, but continued to teach for ten years when the college needed him. In 1972 he was named Dana professor of English Literature. He traveled to Italy many times other European countries as well as to Japan and China. He also loved long summers at the Marsden home on Nantucket Sound on Cape Cod. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Virginia Marsden and his son, John Marsden both of Elmira and his daughter, Mary Marsden of Dennisport, MA. THERE WILL BE NO VISITING HOURS. THE FUNERAL MASS, CELEBRATED BY THE REVEREND KIT TOBIN WILL TAKE PLACE ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2017 AT 3:00PM IN GRACE EPISCOPAL CHURCH ELMIRA, IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FUNERAL, HIS ASHES WILL BE INTERRED IN THE COLUMBARIUM IN ST. MICHAEL’S CHAPEL. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make a memorial donation in Malcolm’s memory to the Marsden Endowment Fund established by the Class of 1958 at Elmira College, or a charity of one’s choice.
