Obituary

Jerome Karl Werkheiser, of Big Flats, NY, passed away on Tuesday, October 25th, 2022, from a 17 month long battle with lung cancer. He was born on January 30th, 1961, in Columbus, OH, to the late Raymond Werkheiser and Kathryn (Flannery) Werkheiser. Jerome graduated from Canton High School in 1979, then went on to serve in the US Navy on the USS Saginaw from 1980-1982. In the course of that time, he received the Humanitarian Service Medal for rescuing a “man overboard” during operations at sea. In 1987, he was hired as an apprentice for the Department of Corrections at the Elmira Correctional Facility. During his 33 years in attendance, Jerome worked his way up the ranks; holding his final position as Plant Utilities Engineer 3, and retired on January 30th, 2020. He was highly respected for his working knowledge of the entire facility. Jerome loved fishing, camping, traveling, casinos, but most of all, family get-togethers. He enjoyed the annual fishing trips to Canada with his brothers-in-law, William Penton, Don Fritz; and nephew, Aaron Penton. Jerry still holds the record for the biggest fish caught. Jerome is survived by his loving and caring wife, Mary (Penton) Werkheiser; children, Jerome Werkheiser, Jr., and Jessica (Tyler) Wisniewski, both of Elmira; stepchildren, Joshua Young and Jason Young, both of Lock Haven, PA, Kristie (Chris) Jenkins of Pine City, NY; siblings, Leo Werkheiser and Rose Werkheiser, both of MS, Kenneth Werkheiser of KY, Raymond Werkheiser of NC, and Phillip Werkheiser of WA; grandchildren, Damian (Courtney) Huffine, Camryn Young, Savanna George, Colin Young, Caleb Young, Lilly Young, Casius Werkheiser, Tillian Werkheiser, Skylar May, and Harper Wisniewski, and predeceased by grandchild, Kaydon Jay Kent; also survived by numerous other family members and friends. At his request, there will be no services.
